With a vision to provide a better supply of products to customers throughout the North, John W. Mapes founded Wesclean Northern Sales Ltd on December 18, 1975.
John started his business from a small shed in his back yard, and had enough inventory space at the time to handle the needs of his customers who were mainly small-business contractors located on the south side of Great Slave Lake. After a couple of years, and continued growth, a section of a building in the industrial area of Hay River was rented. This enabled Wesclean to carry higher stock levels, and the opportunity to handle larger accounts became a reality.
In 1978, Cominco Mines of Pine Point came to Hay River and made Wesclean their exclusive supplier of janitorial supplies. Wesclean’s growth was so substantial that in 1981 they found a need to expand further. A 2400 square foot warehouse was purchased in Hay River and a branch office was opened in Yellowknife to handle the increasing number of accounts with the mines, local businesses in Yellowknife and the surrounding area. Competition with southern companies was healthy but Wesclean wanted an extra edge. In 1983, a 1600 square foot addition to the Hay River warehouse created a manufacturing plant that; with the help of chemists from Montreal, produced 13 industrial products.
John’s teenage son Brad worked at Wesclean since the company’s early stages and was trained in all aspects of the business. In 1985, Brad started working full-time as a Wesclean salesman. He traveled to almost every community in the Northwest Territories by winter road, all-season highways or aircraft. This personal commitment to customer service was the basis for an excellent relationship with Wesclean’s customers throughout the North. Brad also developed a training program for individuals in the custodial field, providing this program to various communities.
In 1992, Brad purchased the company from his father and continued the commitment of providing superior customer service. While Wesclean primarily focused on providing janitorial supplies in the past, Brad decided to expand the business into other fields. In 1993, Wesclean became the local depot for Northwest Transport. This addition prompted the need for a larger location in the future and two years later, the company moved into its present location at 15 Industrial Drive. As the building grew, so did the vision of the company. Within this expansive 7500 square foot warehouse/showroom two new divisions emerged: flooring, paint & wall coverings. In the spring of 2000, Wesclean expanded yet again to meet the growing needs of the flooring division. A 2400 square foot addition was constructed, and showrooms were established to carry a wider range of flooring choices for our Northern customers.
The company has grown immensely under its current leadership and will continue to do so in the years to come. With a vehicle fleet of 2 five ton trucks and 7 cargo vans, Wesclean provides daily courier services to Fort Smith, weekly courier services to Fort Resolution, and acts as a local depot for Grimshaw Trucking, as well as local Purolator services. With an extensive line and superior knowledge of janitorial and industrial products, we continue to serve the Northwest Territories by truck, barge and winter road.
At Wesclean we provide professional service in janitorial products, interior design, paint, sundries, flooring and wall coverings. A wide range of area rugs, prints, mirrors, Lampe Berger home fragrances, Belwith cabinet hardware, Estate Home Accent address plaques, Kitras art glass, Hunter Douglas window coverings and many other specialty products are available at our Hay River retail location.
